14 Suspicious Russian Deaths: Is Putin Killing Oligarchs?

Since the war in Ukraine began, a number of high-ranking businessmen and oligarchs have died in Russia. This video describes how the 14 big names died and discuss whether something suspicious is going on.

On September 12, 2022, Ivan Pechorin, Managing Director for the Aviation Industry of the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, died. Earlier this year, Igor Nosov, the company’s 43-year-old general director, also died.

In 2018, former deputy director of the Russian national air carrier Aeroflot Nikolai Glushkov was found hanged in his home in New Malden, London. An inquest found that Glushkov was unlawfully killed, with his death made to look like a suicide by hanging.

Pechorin’s death came less than two weeks after the chairman of the board of Russia’s largest private oil company, Ravil Maganov, died in what Russian news agencies cited as an accidental fall from a hospital window.

Russian oil executive Ravil Maganov died after plunging from 6th-floor hospital window, and his death was the most well-publicised in a string of accidental self-defenestrations and other suspicious deaths of those who either profited from good relations with Putin or were a thorn in his side.

Eight Russian oligarchs have died under strange circumstances, and investigators are beginning to believe that they were staged suicides or assassinations due to their anti-war stance or their links to corruption in the Russian gas company Gazprom.

A month before the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, a top executive of the gas company Gazprom was found dead in his cottage near St Petersburg with slashed wrists. A suicide note was allegedly found next to his body.

Alexander Tyulyakov, 65, a senior executive of Gazprom’s Corporate Security, was found hanged in his garage the morning after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Mikhail Watford, 66, a Ukrainian-born oil and gas magnate who also built a property empire in London, was found dead at his home in Surrey. His wife and children were unharmed.

Vasily Melnikov and his family were found dead in March in their luxury flat in Nizhny Novgorod. The oligarch had made his fortune working for one of the medical companies affected by Western sanctions.

Sergei Protosenya, 55, a Russian oligarch with a personal worth of €400 million, was found dead along with two other family members in Spain. The case was initially classified as a double homicide followed by Protosenya’s suicide, but was later categorically denied by his son.

The bodies of Russian oligarch Vladislav Avayev and his wife and daughter were found in his Moscow flat just a day before the death of Protosenya and his family. A pistol was found in Avayev’s hand.

Avayev was not the last Gazprom top-level manager to die under strange circumstances, however. In May, Krukovsky died after allegedly falling off a cliff while hiking near the Achipse fortress.

Yuri Voronov, 61, was found shot to death in his swimming pool at his home in St Petersburg. He was the CEO of Astra-Shipping, a subcontractor to Gazprom.

Maganov’s death on Thursday follows the pattern of prominent Russians falling out of windows to their deaths, including a Russian diplomat found dead in Berlin in 2021.

Yegor Prosvirnin, the founder of nationalist blog Sputnik and Pogrom, died after falling out of a window of a Moscow apartment building.

Alexei Navalny says Russian prison has changed his status to ‘terrorist’, Dan Rapoport was found dead in Washington DC, and Sergei Tkachenko fell to his death from his Moscow apartment’s window in 2017.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, at least four health care workers fell out of hospital windows in Russia, with one surviving despite grave injuries.
