Use ChatGPT free of charge: What you need to know

Everyone is talking about the free AI tool ChatGPT. It can be found via the browser and is available as an iOS app. We explain what you need to know.

Use ChatGPT for free via your browser

The chatbot ChatGPT from OpenAI, which works with artificial intelligence (AI), has been on everyone’s lips since the beginning of 2023. The tool responds to your queries in chat format and can answer simple questions as well as write complex texts such as papers and essays.

  • You can easily use the AI tool in your browser by going to chat.openai.com.
  • There is also a desktop application for Windows and ChatGPT’s own iOS app.
  • Before you get started, you must register with your email address and can then use the model for free.
  • Unfortunately, in the free version, overloads occur more frequently – especially in the early evening hours. Then you will get the error message “ChatGPT is at capacity right now” and you won’t be able to use the chatbot.

Cost of the Plus version: This is what you have to expect

There is also a paid professional version of ChatGPT. This started on February 2nd, 2023 in the USA and is also available in EU.

  • The price for ChatGPT Plus is around 23.80 US dollars (approximately 22 euros) per month.
  • An advantage of the Plus version is that you can log in at any time. A certain part of the server is always blocked for Plus customers, who can therefore always access the tool.
  • In addition, new features will first be activated for ChatGPT Plus customers.

Be careful of subscription traps with apps & Co.

However, be wary of apps that take advantage of the open source model and want to make money with expensive subscription traps.

  • There are now new apps in the various app stores such as “Genie – AI Chatbot”, which are based on ChatGPT and some of which offer subscriptions.
  • However, there is no need to download an app and pay money if you want to try out the AI tool on your phone. Simply open the link with your phone and log in or download the iOS app. The application contains the same functions as the web version and is of course free. An app is being planned for Android.
  • Currently, due to increased requests, the website may often be overloaded. If this is the case, try again later.

Whether via app or browser – this is how you use ChatGPT effectively

To get the best possible results from the ChatGPT chatbot, you need to keep a few things in mind.

  • If you want to get accurate answers, you should ask your questions clearly, simply and precisely. Ambiguous wording should be avoided to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Provide context for specific questions and help the AI with appropriate examples. Any additional information will help ensure you receive accurate and relevant answers.
  • It’s best to experiment with your instructions. You can also ask follow-up questions or add instructions. The ChatGPT language model remembers your current conversation. Try phrasing your questions or prompts differently until you get the result you want.
  • Even though ChatGPT is capable of generating high-quality texts, it is advisable to double-check the results. Please take the time to check the generated content for accuracy and make adjustments before simply adopting the content.
  • You can also give feedback to the AI . If you find errors or inappropriate content, you can report it to the OpenAI team. This way you can help to continuously improve the quality of the model.

ChatGPT: This is how the language model works

The ChatGPT language model works by analyzing large amounts of text data from the Internet and using it to learn patterns in human language. These patterns enable artificial intelligence to generate human-like texts that respond to the text entered.

How ChatGPT works can be divided into the following steps:

  1. Training: ChatGPT has been trained on a diverse set of text data collected from books, articles, websites, and other sources. During training, the model learns how words, sentences and contexts are related in natural language.
  2. Text processing: When a request is made to ChatGPT, the model analyzes the input text and uses its internal representations to understand the context and meaning.
  3. Generation: ChatGPT then generates a response for users by generating text based on the understood context. The model can write both short answers and longer texts.
  4. Customization: OpenAI can customize ChatGPT for specific use cases or specific tasks. This can be done by fine-tuning to specific data or by using instructions.
  5. Interaction: ChatGPT can interact in various ways, be it textually through a user interface or as part of an application.

Dangers of using ChatGPT

With the chatbot ChatGPT, the development and spread of artificial intelligence has taken a big leap. But this development is not entirely without danger.

  • ChatGPT is a so-called LLM language model. This means the software will generate the most likely answer. However, users have no guarantee whether the program will give the correct answer. Because: Just because a constellation makes sense in terms of language, the output is not always knowledge.
  • In addition, the use of a chatbot that feeds on data on the Internet poses great risks when it comes to copyright issues. Copyright of some authors, be it texts, content for search engines on Google or Bing, or even poetry, could be infringed by the language model or the generated content and chats.
  • Despite the impressive capabilities of the software, we need people who can develop, question and research. When using the program, people and companies have a responsibility to use the powerful artificial intelligence conscientiously.
